Is this course approved by the state of New Jersey?
This online defensive driving course and course provider, American Safety Council, are approved by the state of New Jersey's Motor Vehicle Commission to allow drivers a 2-point reduction and insurance discount upon successful completion.
What happens when I complete the defensive driving course?
Upon successful completion:
- Two points will be removed from the accumulated points you currently have on your license
- You may also qualify for an insurance rate reduction (contact your insurance agent for more information)
How do I know if I can get points removed?
If you are convicted of a moving violation, the New Jersey MVC will penalize you by adding points to your driving record. You will only get points on your record for moving violations - points are not assessed for parking and other violations.
You will not qualify for point reduction if you have already completed the course within the past 5 years.
Is the course completely online?
Yes, the registration, course and final exam are all 100% online.
When will I get my point reduction?
Point reduction credits will be provided to students who successfully complete the defensive driving course after receipt of evidence of course completion by the Chief Administrator at the Motor Vehicle Commission in New Jersey. You must submit your completion certificate within 10 days of course completion. Your point reduction will occur once the state receives your certificate.
How do I get my insurance reduction?
The state of New Jersey allows an insurance reduction for completion of this defensive driving course that will last 3 years. The amount can be up to 10%. Contact your insurance company and provide the certificate of completion to see how much your discount will be.
Do I have to complete the course in one sitting?
No you can log on and off as you like, the system will save your progress.

How often can I take the course to remove points?
You may take the online NJ defensive driving course once every five years for point removal.
